The Hiker

During the summer we've been taking a walk around five most evenings just as it starts to cool off a little and Pero has taken to walking with us. Going for a walk with their humans is something that I've seen cats do before but with her it's as if she's suddenly developed very dog-like habits. She hasn't started barking yet but as soon as the sun gets over to the west she hangs around the front door watching for us putting our shoes on in the genkan.

Of course we take care to use the paths where there is no traffic, but she seems fairly confident to step it out anywhere with us within about a 500 metre radius of the house. If we go so far that it gets scary she soon starts to meow.

I remember reading a book on cats once where it said that females typically ranged up to 500 metres from home and males around a kilometre. That's the usual size of a cat's hunting territory.

Pero's rather fun to walk with. She keeps up with us without difficulty and likes to tease us with the occasional game of hide-and-seek. It's strange to take a cat for a walk where last winter I was walking our old dog Kuu
